The terms carbide and solid carbide are often used interchangeably, but there is a distinction when it comes to tooling and machining:

Carbide

  • General Definition: "Carbide" refers to a compound made from carbon and a metal, most commonly tungsten carbide (WC) or titanium carbide (TiC). It's a material that can be used for various applications, such as coatings, inserts, or parts.
  • In Tools: When referring to cutting tools, carbide might mean carbide-coated tools, where a layer of carbide is applied to a tool made of steel (e.g., high-speed steel or tool steel). This coating improves wear resistance but does not give the tool the full hardness or toughness of solid carbide.

Solid Carbide

  • Material: "Solid carbide" refers to tools made entirely from carbide, typically tungsten carbide, without any coating or additional layers. This means the tool is made of a single piece of carbide material.
  • Properties: Solid carbide tools are hardermore wear-resistant, and capable of withstanding higher temperatures than carbide-coated tools. They are ideal for precision cutting and high-performance applications.
  • Common Use: Solid carbide is typically used for making end millsdrills, and cutting inserts that are required to perform in tough materials and high-speed machining.

Key Differences

FeatureCarbide (Coated)Solid Carbide
Materialcoating applied to another metal (e.g., steel)Made entirely from tungsten carbide or another carbide compound
HardnessLess hard than solid carbideVery hard, often HRC 70+
DurabilityGood wear resistance, but not as strong as solid carbideExcellent wear resistance and toughness
ApplicationsIdeal for low to medium-speed cutting and general-purpose toolsBest for high-performance cutting and high-speed machining
