The distinction lies in the direction of the cutter's rotation relative to the feed:

  • Conventional Milling (Up Milling): The cutter rotates against the direction of the feed, starting with a small chip that increases in thickness. This can cause the tool to slide before cutting, potentially leading to work hardening.
  • Climb Milling (Down Milling): The cutter rotates in the same direction as the feed, starting with a thick chip that decreases. This method provides a better finish and longer tool life but requires machines with minimal backlash.
